Operation Breakout
Breaking out of the Status Quo Matthew 28:18-20
July 2009
Matthew 28: 18-20, we find some very familiar words of Jesus. We know them as the Great Commission. Our mandate. Our marching orders from our Commander in Chief, the Lord Jesus Christ! We discover that personal evangelism and discipleship are not options for true followers of Jesus Christ. Operation Breakout was birthed in the heart of a few of our men, who desired God to bring our church from her complacency to becoming “Frontline Soldiers” for Christ.

Since we as a church began the study by Dr. Henry Blackaby, “Experiencing God” we have come to learn that Operation Breakout is the way for us to make Experiencing God a way of life, not just another study course we have completed.
In order to sustain growth, three things must occur.
  1. Establish a sense of urgency.
  2. Create a guiding coalition.
  3. Develop a vision and a strategy.

As of today, the first two have taken place. We are living in difficult times. We are calling Morningside Baptist Church to develop a sense of urgency. To have the heart of God as we seek to reach our community for Christ. Secondly, a guiding coalition is now in place. This is a list of those who will be working with Les Lewis, our director:
  1. Prayer – Herb Rimmer
  2. Education and Discipleship – Bill Rogers
  3. Outreach and Evangelism – Bob Olson
  4. Morale and Enthusiasm – Dennis Helton
  5. Advertising & Public Information –
  6. Youth – Carla Quesenberry

There are already some exciting results from Operation Breakout. Herb Rimmer is specifically praying with a number of our church family each week. Bill Dennis and our advertising team has developed a beautiful new Morningside Brochure, which 34 families have committed to distributing them to their neighbors through personal contact. We would love to hear from you, and to include in our update what God is doing through you, so please share with us.

We are asking our church family to pray for our Operation Breakout Leadership Team each week by adding this request to your personal prayer list. Each week in our bulletin, we will list a specific leadership team and leader. The purpose of this, is for Morningside each week to lift up in prayer our leadership team by name.

In addition, we are asking for your prayers as we seek God for His vision and strategy, to make Operation Breakout a reality. Jesus prayed these words found in John 17:3 – “This is eternal life, that they may know You, the only true God, and Jesus Christ whom You have sent.”

“The heart of eternal life is for you to know God, and to know Jesus Christ whom He has sent. Knowing God does not come through a program, a study, or a method. Knowing God comes through a relationship with God. It is through this relationship, God reveals Himself, His purposes, and His ways; and He invites you to join Him where He is already at work. When you obey, God accomplishes through you something only He can do. Then you come to know God in a more intimate way by experiencing God at work through you.” Dr. Henry T. Blackaby.

May 2009

Matthew 28: 18, 19 & 20 is the Great Commission. It is a mandate from our Savior, Jesus Christ to make disciples of all people. Operation Breakout is a program that, we pray will enable our church to accomplish its part in the Great Commission.

Our church has been in a status quo condition for a number of years. We gain a few and lose a few but basically, the membership remains about the same. Previous efforts such as PUSH and the Josh Hunt programs haven’t worked. PUSH was successful initially, leading to the increase in the numbers of deacons from 3 to 7, as well as some record keeping changes.

In order to sustain growth, three things must occur.
  1. Establish a sense of urgency.
  2. Create a guiding coalition.
  3. Develop a vision and a strategy.
There is an urgent need for growth at MBC. Breaking out of the status quo will require a lot of teamwork. Everyone can participate, if you don’t want to engage directly in evangelism, you can obtain referrals for the outreach teams. It is important that Operation Breakout be accomplished in an attitude of harmony and enthusiasm.

Our guiding coalition has been formed. It is composed of 8 sectors:
  1. Prayer – Herb Rimmer
  2. Education – Bill Rogers
  3. Outreach and Evangelism – Bob Olson
  4. Morale and Enthusiasm – Dennis Helton
  5. Small Groups
  6. Hispanic Contact
  7. Advertising & Public Information – Bill Dennis
  8. Youth – Carla Quesenberry

It is imperative that we stay the course and that we don’t give up. Any suggestions as to how Operation Breakout can be better accomplished will be sincerely appreciated and considered.

The following is a list of proposed objectives and solutions. It is by no means final, it may be added to or modified:
  1. Stimulate growth at MBC.
  2. Promote participation in church activities such as: Sunday, 8:00am and Wednesday 6:30pm. Prayer times, Saturday Men’s Fellowship and breakfast, Women’s WOW breakfast, AWANA.
  3. Encourage congregation to provide leads for outreach through referral cards in the pews.
  4. Provide instruction for Bible School Teachers and Outreach workers.
  5. Publicize church activities and invite the public to attend such activities as revivals, concerts, movies, and special Bible studies such as “Revelation”.
  6. Promote harmony and enthusiasm in our church at every opportunity. Recognize members for jobs well done.
How do we do it?
  1. Get down on your knees and pray to our Father in Heaven. Pray – Not casual, mechanical prayer, but with all of you heart! He will provide!
  2. Hold a meeting of all small group leaders. Ask each small group to organize its own outreach plan.
  3. Combat spiritual apathy. Resolve to be a disciple for Jesus and praise Him at every opportunity. Be enthusiastic! We can do it.
  4. Print outreach referral cards.
  5. Construct a sign on which we can announce upcoming events at Morningside.
  6. Keep the congregation informed as to what we are doing and ask for their participation.
  7. Organize education classes such as: “Share Jesus Without Fear”, “Experiencing God”, “Fireproof”, “Bible Study Teaching”.

Initially the most needed event to occur in Operation Breakout is to generate outreach referrals. These referrals will be utilized by Outreach Teams to contact prospective members.

If you know someone who needs JESUS, you are urged to provide these referrals by filling out the cards provided in the pews. Please fill the cards out and place them in the collection plates or on the tables in the foyer.
